Reed Watts Architects is a design-focused studio based in London. Established in 2015, we have a reputation for creative and thoughtful architecture. We work over a range of scales and sectors – from fit-outs, pavilions and houses, to larger commercial and residential projects, public and cultural buildings.
We believe that good design enriches our environment and our lives and that it should be accessible to everyone. We are passionate about the craft of building and seek delight and beauty in detail and innovation. This is underpinned by considerable technical expertise and a commitment to sustainability in all its forms – environmental, social and economic.
Many of our projects deal with listed buildings, conservation areas and sensitive landscapes. We enjoy the challenges and opportunities that these bring and recognise the value that existing structures have in our cultural memory and the part they play in a low-carbon future.
Our Team
We believe that the best buildings are derived not only from outstanding creativity and design, but also from great teamwork. Central to this is an open and inclusive working methodology in which our role is to both listen and to lead the design team.
Jim is a founding Director of Reed Watts.
He studied at the University of Sheffield, after which he joined Proctor and Matthews. In 2001, Jim joined Haworth Tompkins where he became an Associate Director, leading teams on a number of award winning projects in a variety of sectors. He gained a particular expertise in the creative adaptation and re-use of existing buildings, many of which were listed.
At Reed Watts Jim has continued to work on a broad range of typologies at various scales, often where budgets and sensitive sites have required innovative solutions. He has experience of many construction methodologies, including those appropriate for parkland and ecologically sensitive settings.
Jim has taught at Kingston University since 2016 at Masters and Undergraduate level. A keen painter, Jim has exhibited widely, including the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy.
Matt is a founding Director of Reed Watts.
Prior to this Matt worked at Haworth Tompkins for nearly twenty years and over that time designed and delivered a number of award winning projects, including leading the refurbishment of the Young Vic Theatre in London. He became Associate Director in 2011 and was leader of the company’s Housing Team, responsible for delivering the majority of the practice’s major housing projects including project for Peabody, Guinness Trust, One Housing Group and for the Athlete’s Village in Stratford.
Since establishing Reed Watts, Matt has continued to lead projects, using his experience to guide design at a strategic and a detailed technical level.
Matt sits on the RIBA’s Architects for Change advisory panel which provides the RIBA with support in improving diversity and promoting equality within the profession. He also volunteers for the Social Mobility Foundation, giving support to students from low-income families who would like to pursue a career in architecture.
Matt is a trained Principal Designer and is a Trustee at Kingswood Arts.
