Process

…a delicate balance between practical considerations and creative vision

Model-making and prototyping form an important part of the design process, especially where new construction techniques or materials are being tested.

What we do

We have broad portfolio of work which stems from a natural curiosity to take on new challenges. We are often drawn to projects with a strong social or cultural purpose, many of which have a complex and demanding set of variables.

There is no signature style for our projects. The end result is always a tailored alchemy of the brief, the context or existing building, the programme and budget blending the practical considerations with a vision for what the end result should be.

We spend an unusual amount of time on site through the process, learning, observing and researching, to establish the ‘spirit of place’.  We work hard to understand the physical and technical parameters of the project but equally to empathise with the ambition and values of our clients and the future users of the building.

Teamwork

Key to success is a shared trust and confidence between the architect, client and the design team. We help to establish this tone at the earliest opportunity through open dialogue and mutual respect for what each individual brings to the process.

We work with the best teams and strive to alleviate friction, creating an enjoyable and supportive atmosphere throughout the design stages, then onto site and beyond.

Experience

Listening is one of our key skills, but we are also adept at interrogating and developing briefs, creating opportunities from constraints. We work in an iterative manner, testing and prodding ideas, shaping them to reflect input from other team members. And then testing again. This methodical and patient approach imbues the chosen design with an inherent confidence and robustness, both aesthetically and practically. Our directors take an active role in every project, each bringing with them over 25 years of experience in the design and delivery of technically challenging projects.

Delivery

We are hands on. We have learnt that experience is key to developing a concept into construction information which can be clearly translated into a successful building.

We pride ourselves on excellent communication -  using our expertise to guide, motivate and co-ordinate while remaining open minded and resourceful.

Balancing a budget is a careful combination of judgement and creativity. We care deeply that our buildings stand the test of time. We have maintained the trust of our clients such as the V&A Museum, Open Air Theatre and Shoreditch Town Hall having completed numerous phases and projects. Through many meetings with facilities managers we understand the importance of reducing maintenance and running costs - and selecting materials that will be both robust and age gracefully.
