Stephen Joseph Theatre

Refurbishment of a studio theatre and cinema

Originally a 1930s Odeon cinema the Stephen Joseph Theatre is an independent theatre and cinema and a significant heritage asset to Scarborough.  The Grade II listed structure is supports two auditoria – the ‘Round’ and the ‘Mac’.

Located on the third floor of the building the Mac used as both a theatre and cinema. The space is currently underwhelming and suffers from many practical constraints as well as tired decoration.

Works to the Mac space will enhance the building’s existing character and markedly improve its accessibility, durability and environmental efficiency.

The proposals will improve the auditorium and surrounding areas, increasing capacity and providing a distinctive style to better reflect the heritage and significance of the building as a whole.

New facilities include an accessible lift and a small public bar. Toilets are relocated to make the most of the space at this level.

The first phase is complete which includes a new roof and plant to the Round.
